A letter to mom and dad.

No, my child did not write this....but I bet he could have! I saw this on another friends blog today and thought it was important enough to re share. I know a few parents who have a child like this as well.

Ill never forget when a therapist told me that Hunter trying to focus in school was like being in a room with a million flashing colored lights, and someone yelling at you to focus on the one black light in the back. I imagine that would be mentally exhausting. If this letter touches you like it did me, feel free to share it. I wish I knew who wrote it so I could give credit.

Dear Mom and Dad,
I want you to know what it's like to be me.

My brain runs like a washing machine powered by a Ferrari engine. It runs all the time and it runs fast, churning and tumbling ideas like shirts and pants and socks mixed together. I can be talking to you and having another conversation running inside my head. I can be in class listening to the teacher, but be fully engaged in a daydream about Legos or hearing a new song on my guitar.

You know how I sometimes repeat questions? It's not that I didn't hear your answer. It's just that in the second between the time I asked and you responded, I went somewhere interesting in my mind. Sometimes I have so many thoughts swimming inside my head that I just blurt things out because I'm afraid I will forget them.

I kind of like all this energy inside my head because I can keep myself entertained in there by myself. But other times I feel scattered and like there's not much order up in my brain. Everything's swirling. That's why I like things to be just so and why I need to know what we're doing all the time. It's why I end up wearing or eating the same things. New things freak me out a bit because I don't know what to expect, so please don't be mad at me when I'm anxious.

I want to do well in school. But sometimes the ideas in my head are so strong or interesting, and when I follow them even for a few seconds, I fall behind. And once I'm lost in class, sometimes I figure I may as well just keep thinking about these ideas. It's like they call to me to work on them and see them through.

This is hard to explain, but sometimes I feel my body screaming to me to move and like I need contact, to push up against something. It makes me feel better inside. I'll be sitting in class and if I haven't gotten any exercise, I feel like I'm about to explode. But then I know my teacher will get upset if I get up, so I sit there kind of frozen, not sure what to do. I promise I don't get in trouble on purpose.

Okay, I was lying. Sometimes I do get in trouble on purpose. I like to get the reaction from people when I'm bored. It wakes my brain up. And if I'm really bored or my body is screaming at me, I'll get in trouble just so I can get out of class to walk down the hall. It's such a relief. But then I feel bad later and I know everyone is mad at me.

I don't expect you to understand this, but little things just bother me. I'm not making it up to be difficult, I promise, so please don't be mad at me when I tell you some place smells really bad or I have to change my socks or it's too loud and I have to leave the room. I know you get tired of fixing the same thing for me to eat, but a lot of foods just don't feel right and it feels like I'm going to gag. I'll try better.

Sometimes being a kid is tough for me. I'd rather be doing grown up stuff, I'd rather hang out with adults and older kids. I get bored with kid stuff pretty easily. It's like I have an adult brain and ideas stuck inside a kid's body. That's why I like to hang out with Uncle Tom and work down at Mr. Brown's shop with him-he gives me grown up jobs and trusts me. And he always says I do a good job for him, and that makes me feel good.

There's something inside me that says if I can just get through childhood, I'm going to make a great adult one day. I'll be a good Dad because I know what it feels like to hurt as a kid and be misunderstood. And I know I don't always do great in school, but I have good ideas and I can work at something really hard when I'm passionate about it. I don't have any fear of the future, it's just the present that isn't much fun.

Okay, I know I say I'm all grown up and everything in some ways, but things hurt me more than you think. I know you guys are trying really hard and I'm difficult, but I kind of know that everyone wishes I were different. I see the way Grandma and Grandpa treat Adam and Grace different than me. You know all those little comments you guys make, the way Dad shakes his head in disapproval, the way Mom groans and all those hushed conversations you have with the teacher, therapist and principal? I know what it means. I know people think I'm a bad kid because I don't always behave like my brother and sister or the other kids.

That's why I like hanging out with Buster a lot, because he likes me the way I am because I give him lots of attention and take him on walks. And that's why I like to play video games and be alone sometimes. It's like my heart can only take so much and then I have to withdraw a little bit.

I know I don't get invited to birthday parties like Adam and Grace. It used to really hurt me, but in some ways I like not having a lot of friends. It's partly by choice, because I'm pretty content inside actually.

I like who I am, but it's tough when no one else seems to. Why does everyone want to change who I am? I'm not unhappy with myself-I'm uneasy because since I can remember, everyone around me has been so negative and tried to fix what they think is wrong with me.

You want me to talk more, but you just psychoanalyze me. Besides, it's difficult to express my thoughts and feelings verbally-they just get jumbled up. I'd rather express them in my writing and music. I want you to know that I feel things deeply, I do. I hurt with the kids who get left out, and one day I'm going to help those kids. I know how it feels.

I know you get concerned because I stay up late at night and don't sleep much. But I like it when it's quiet. I can hear my thoughts better. And my world is peaceful then.

Thank you for all you do for me. You think I don't appreciate it, but I do. I know I'm not exactly the way you want me to be or the kid you expected, but I'm going to be good as an adult and you'll be proud of me then.

Mom and Dad, don't worry about me. I may not do great in school or be the most popular kid, but I'm content inside. I like the way my brain works, I like my energy. If everyone would stop trying to fix me, I'd be okay. Please stop trying to make me be like everyone else. I like who I am. Do you?

Moms Weekend Away

A couple of years ago when we moved to Colorado I had high expectations of all the friends I would reunite with. It turned out that Colorado Springs was a lot more isolating than I imagined and driving to Denver everyday for friendship was not going to cut it. After just 10 days of living here Russ was off to Korea and I was left to fend for myself with the 3 kiddos. One of the first things I did was look up the Mops in my area. I started at one church and they were meeting every other Thursday, I tried it out and just didn't feel like I fit in. Then after Winter break came and went I tried another Mops, I was excited about this one because it was ONCE A WEEK! Socialization with other moms?! Yes please!

Turns out, it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me. I made a huge community of friends who are all amazing people. I have never in my life had this big of a support system filled with so many great friends. I am so glad I went to mops, even better moms weekend away!

Every year we go off to the Hideaway, a bed and breakfast tucked away in the woods, we have a speaker and FREE TIME, plus hot tubs, plus those aforementioned women, and it turns into quite a weekend of fun!

This is Ruth, she was my mentor mom last year in Mops and again this year, and probably for always. I cherish her dearly!

We spent time frolicking in the woods without a care in the world!
and found a weapons shack just in case of apocalypse? maybe?
We stared and stared at the beauty of Pikes peak.
Created a table in the hot tub to trap the escaping heat. Pivot!
Spent a lot of time here...
 our hideaway.
We brought along a friend who couldn't make it this year.
 She had a fun weekend!
and so did I with my loves. If you are a lonely mom, I highly recommend finding yourself a Mops group and building a community. Every one should have a net.

P.S. If you read my blogs, leave me some love in the blog comments so I know you're out there! No one likes to talk to themselves :)

40 bags in 40 days

Last year I was inspired by my friend Melissa. She started a project she had found on another blog called 40 bags in 40 days. Every year for lent, you are supposed to give something up, I usually "give up" going to Target, or drinking soda or Starbucks.

40 bags in 40 days is a great lent project!
The idea is that during the 40 days of lent you rid your house of 40 bags of "stuff." All those extras we hold onto and dont need and fill our cabinets and closets, that watch you as you walk by! okay not really but I feel overtaken by my house sometimes. Especially in the days right after Christmas where all the new stuff comes in to join all the rest of the stuff! Its time to take action and de clutter.

I am so excited to get started, I am a tad OCD (CDO) and love organizing. I have come up with my list of areas I want to attack and I have already started. I know its not lent yet, but Easter is on my oldest sons birthday this year so I wanted to get started early. I also know I will end up with way more than 40 bags!

Here is my list:

The one areas I am most afraid of are the corners of the basement. We seem to save everything! Why?! Is there a child apocalypse we are preparing for? Blankets and toys and clothes, from 3 children I have saved! When we first moved into this house we wanted the basement to be a play area, but instead it has become a storage unit.

I got started this morning with the upstairs hall closet. Here is the before...
 and here is the after!
So much "stuff" taking over our lives.

I am so excited to be finished and know that I will feel less stressed with less stuff over taking our home.

I plan to blog about my progress, and hope that others will join in too! I know Melissa is doing it again this year.

Join me wont you!?

10 on 10

Happy  ten on ten!
{Document a snapshot of your life & find beauty among the ordinary things in your day!}

This edition is brought to you from Boston! I am here by myself visiting my best friend  for my birthday weekend, wahoo! :)

We started our day lounging around. This is Kiah she is my favorite.

We took Kiah to the Aboreatum from Hahvahd. I notice when there are not kids around a lot of pictures of the dog.
ON a walk in the snow!
I love this one lone red bush.
Then we went to the grocery story, Roche Bros!. This is where I learned its not customary to say hi to people like it is on the west coast.
We came home and made Granola bars and Kiah helped.

 yum yum.

Cars help warm blooded and cold blooded people get along better.

Mumford and sons helped me get a terrible song out of my head, Thank you Mumford!
To end the tenth we went out and played Trivia. Our team LA Faces and Oakland booties won! A 25$ gift certificate to the restaurant. Nailed it!

It was a good day! Until next month :)

Haileys Tangled up in fun party!

Haileys 6th birthday celebration began the day before in her class. The class does a celebration once a month for each January kid. Ironically Hailey was the only January birthday! Which baffles me because I know at least 40 people with a January birthday.

We passed out cupcakes and sang to her

she got to take the first bite, and as soon as she did her 3rd tooth fell out! She has lost 3 teeth in about 10 days. I think shes saving up for a car.
The next day was her party. We invited a lot of kids! The new rule at school is you cant just invite a few you have to invite the entire class...so with fear in my hands I did, but luckily only about 15 kids showed up haha.
I made her invitation on photoshop and I really love it!

Hailey dressed like Rapunzel and insisted on carrying Pascal around in a frying pan the whole time. No one was hit over the head though! Promise!

I made her headband with yarn, a bow we already had and glued them to a headband we already owned.

We played "All tangled up"
We also played Catch Pascal in the frying pan, Pin the crown on Rapunzel, and had a pinata! I spent most my time wrangling children so I didnt get any photos of all the games :)

I managed to get a group picture of all of Haileys friends! I love the happiness bursting from this photo.
Then we set them loose for awhile while we waited for cake.
 Out comes the Birthday Cake!

Then It was the anticipated Present time! I always crack up how all the kids get as close as they can to the one opening presents. I get really nervous when people watch me open gifts but Hailey LOVES the attention.

Then we set the kids off to run all the sugar off in the backyard while they waited for their parents. At one point all we could hear was high pitched screaming and they had all crammed themselves in this tiny house! I apologize to my neighbors for that one.

We had a lot of fun and I think the party went really well. We really did get tangled up in fun!!
and my mom finally made it on my blog, she will be so happy.

Stay tuned for the interview with a 6 year old!
